2.5 miles north of Roscommon on side road off of Steckert Bridge Road on the south side of beautiful South Branch Au Sable River in north-central Michigan.
There are plenty of recreational opportunities in the area including: *Canoeing - take a short 1.25 hour trip from Roscommon to Steckert Bridge or a 50 minute trip from Steckert Bridge to Chase Bridge. - A day long trip through the Mason Tract to Smith Bridge is another possibility.
*Fishing - high quality flies only water on certain sections of the river.
*Swimming - in the river or North Higgins Lake State Park or Gerrish Higgins Township Park. Another possibility is Kneff Lake. Travel north for several miles on Stephan Bridge Rd. On east side of road before M-72.
*Hiking - experience an old growth forest and Michigan logging history at Hartwick Pines State Park. Exit 259 off I-75 just north of Grayling. Or a 1 1/2 mi. trail at the Red Pine Natural Area near Kirtland Community College where you can also experience an old growth pine forest.
Experience the Marguerite Nature Preserve off South Hill Rd just south of Roscommon with 2.5 miles of walking trails including a wheel chair accessible pathway.
*History - Visit the CCC Museum across the road from North Higgins Lake State Park and experience life in a 1930's era Civilian Conservation Corps camp. *You may also want to visit the Grayling Fish Hatchery on North Down River Rd near Grayling.
*Golf - Available at Forest Hills Country Club west of Roscommon.
*Kirtland's Warbler Tours are offered daily at 7 a.m. and 7 a.m. & 11 a.m. on weekends. May 25 - June 30. Dates vary yearly. Meet at Hartwick Pines State Park Visitor Center. Exit 259 off I-75 just north of Grayling. See one of the rarest birds in the world in its natural habitat!
